  SUMMARY

The purpose of this study was to develop a methodology for detecting knots in Pinus radiata wood. This methodology is based upon the analysis of inner reflections of length effort waves generated by means of acoustic vibrations. The objetives were (1) to specify through this analysis, the location, size and numbers of unique features existing in a piece of wood of commercial dimension, and (2) to find a predictor parameter that by itself together with the dynamic elasticity module allow an efficient quality differentiation 0.1 the structural wood.

Using a set of pieces of wood, free of defects, several acoustic trials simulating knots of different diameters were performed. In addition, other pieces with real knots located in different locations inside the piece of wood were tested.

Among the main results, it is shown that produces the reflexibility of the effort's wave is the change of acoustic impedance between the wood and the knot. It is also shown that fibers inclination associated to the knot doesn't have a significant effect on the reflection of the effort's wave. On the other hand, from the application of the Fast Fourier Transformer (FFT) to the pulses, it is shown that both knots and perforations reflect harmonics over 10 kH.

As a conclusion, it is said that the proposed acoustic methodology allows to predict the number, location and size of the knots inside a piece of wood; this is possible by means of the effort's wave produced by them.
