peso seco total (5,6 a 8,6 g).
Palabras
clave: tratamientos pregerminativos,

Maiten
seeds were collected in April of 1993, in the Experimental Field
Rinconada de Maipú, Región Metropolitana. In the laboratory,
the effects of aril, cultivation temperature, pregerminative treatments,
and period .and type of storage on germination were studied. Also,
in the Antumapu nursery, the effect of sowing time, both in polyetheline
bags and wooden flats, on germination and the quality of the plants
was analyzed.
Results
of these studies established several things. Aril significantly
inhibit germination, and their removal by rubbing with sand allows
this problem to be overcome. Scarification and stratification at
5°C, improve germinative capacity and speed of germination as
long as there is a period of humid caldo Although part
of the seed (8%) under the same treatment germinates within the
first 45 days of stratification, 89,3% germination (92,0% of germinativecapacity)
is reached in 90 days. Cultivation temperature very significantly
affects as much the percentage of germination as it does germination
speed. Optimal temperatures were 10 °C and 15°C, with germinative
capacities, in 90 days of tests between 54,7% and 74,7% for seeds
without aril, and between 4,0% and 18,7% for seeds with aril; a
temperature of 30°C was lethal.
The
most adequate type of storage was cold-humid (5°C, in humid
sand) for a period of up to 90 days, in that the germination levels
reached 52%. The differences compared to the other treatments (storage
under ambient conditions and cold storage in hermetic bags, seeds
with and without aril, periods from 45 to 270 days) were statistically
signicant. Subsequent observation showed 4% germination at 135 days
and 0% at 180 in cold-humid storage.
Direct
sowings in pots and wooden flats were done in the nursery on May
10, June 28 and August 9 of 1993. In general, improved results were
shown with the May sowings; among these were germinative capacity
(12 to 36%), plant height (57.4 to 82.3 cm), neck diameter (3.2
to 4.6 mm), and total dry weight (5.6 to 8.6 g).
