A
method is presented that allows the naturalness of the Metropolitan
Region landscape to be characterized through the use of Geographic
Information Systems tools. The study has two stages: the first,
an initial diagnosis of the physical and biological variables present
in the Region; the second, an analysis of the landscape quality
through the assignation of normalized values. As a result of the
study, eleven macrozones were identified distributed among three
categories of landscape quality. The higher quality values are located
in the Andean Mountain foothill and the high Andean Mountain chain
sectors associated with shallow valleys and saddles more than 800
meters above sea level and having vegetation indigenous to the high
Andean steppe. Mean quality is represented in sectors of the Coastal
Mountain chain asociated with a lower altitude and having scrub
vegetation from indigenous forest renoval. Finally, the lowest landscape
quality can be found amply represented in the large part of the
Central Valley and the Coastal Mountain valley associated with low
altitude plains and having high human impact and predominantly agricultural
vegetation.
